A warm welcome to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) at Pegasus School.
Our EYFS classes are:
- 2 by 2 (Nursery 2 year olds)
- Carle Family (Nursery 3/4 year olds)
- Rosen Family and Donaldson Family (Reception classes)
Please see the “Welcome Packs” linked below for more information and some FAQs about each class.
At Pegasus School, our belief that every child can be an outstanding learner begins with the children in our EYFS classes.
We believe that every child can experience success. For this to happen, they must feel safe, valued and happy in our setting. It is our priority to build and maintain caring relationships with each child and their family based on mutual trust, respect and communication. We work together with families and, where appropriate, other professionals (such as the health visitor, the paediatric team, the school’s Special Educational Needs Coordinator, social workers, etc.) to support each child to reach their potential.
We have high ambitions for each child and embrace their individual development, interests and skills to help them make progress towards their goals and to foster a love of learning. Books and talk are at the heart of our curriculum – we use stories to learn about the world, ourselves and each other. We love to learn both inside and outside, all year around. Our play-based curriculum allows us to immerse our children in a language-rich environment full of hands-on experiences and high-quality adult-child interactions. Our adults are role models to our children and embody our school values (respect, confidence, determination, enthusiasm, creativity and ambition) which allows our children to learn and adopt these too.
To support your child’s journey of learning to read and write, we follow the phonics scheme Read, Write Inc. Each EYFS class also has an inviting reading area and a home-school lending library to help promote a love of reading. We follow Power Maths and NCTEM’s Mastering Number to support learning in mathematics.
Your child will get the opportunity to go to Forest School as part of their Early Years journey. Attitudes, skills and knowledge will be taught and built upon in sessions in the on-site Forest School area with our Forest School Leader Mrs Potts from 2 by 2 through to Reception.
As each child progresses through our Early Years, they will build upon their existing learning with new skills, knowledge and attitudes. Our adults ensure that transitions between classes are smooth and positive and information on this will be communicated with families at the appropriate time. Our indoor and outdoor environments are carefully designed to suit the age and stage of development of each class. Similarly, so is the learning. Children in 2 by 2 mainly focus on the three prime areas in our curriculum (Communication and Language, Personal Social and Emotional Development, Physical Development) and this remains a strong focus throughout their time in Early Years. As they progress through Nursery and into Reception, they will learn more of the specific areas of our curriculum too (Literacy, Maths, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design).
We follow guidance outlined in the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (2021) and the non-statutory guidance Development Matters (2021) and Birth to Five Matters (2021) and the United Learning Curriculum to shape our curriculum. We follow the Statutory Framework and school's policies and procedures to keep all children safe.
